Evaluation Question 1

Evaluation Question 1 Script Draft

Question: In what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In this directors cut I will be discussing how our music video and media products develop and challenge the forms and conventions of real life media. We have chosen the song ‘Empty’ by an unsigned artist called Olivia O'Brien. We decided that that the main theme of the song was about a young girl who feels as if depression is taking over life due to the abandonment from society. Ironically following Levi Strauss' binary opposite theory we had moments in the video where the artist is in busy areas surrounded by crowds when mentioning feeling alone. This idea came about from the lyrics of the song, ‘I can't handle these pressures’, 'I don't want to live but I'm too scared to die' to portray that being in the center of society doesn't mean you are being noticed but perhaps looked through. To reinforce the message of emptiness we have followed Goodwin's rules by linking the lyrics to the visuals by placing the artist in the busy streets of London to juxtapose the idea of abandonment.
An editing technique that is often a common convention of music videos is cutting to the beat. I believe we successfully showed this in the section of the song where the first chorus is introduced at 1:07 and at 1.24 during the instrumental part the editing of the car passing through fits the beat perfectly. We decided to use passing cars as we've discovered from research on other real media products that it was a common technique used, to make it more creative we used shallow focus and speed variation to suit the tempo of the music. It is also one of Goodwin’s rules to cut to the beat therefore it is used in many big star artists music videos, which influenced our choice in order to have a more professional looking music video.

Throughout our music video there is a range of camerawork and editing techniques used to make the video more creative and intriguing to watch. We used a tilt shot just before the lyrics 'i wish there was no tomorrow' i believe this is effective as it suggests her world is currently a mess and feels no need to carry on with this. To contribute to the shot we added the prism effect highlight the spectacle aspect of our video. Our editing techniques also suggest the artists frustration as we used layering to portray the artist looking back on her memories on the line 'Wish i could erase my memory' therefore highlighting the unhappiness surrounding her fulfilling a convention of a pop genre. These are examples of how we developed conventions of real media as we have fulfilled conventions of a pop music video through camerawork and editing techniques.

After researching a variety of pop genre music videos we wanted our artist to look dressed up so that attention was drawn to her therefore highlighting the image genre. The outfits consisted of black extreme ripped jeans with either a burgundy or silver revealing top or non revealing black top with a sleeveless, fluffy black jacket (to show contrast between the reckless and timid characteristics of the artist) with high heeled boots. Some audience members may link Laura Mulvey's 'The Male Gaze' theory to our music video due to the revealing clothing and close ups of the artists creating a sexualised image of the artist which in act is not our aim. We challenged Berger's 'Ways of seeing' theory as our artist is presented in this sexualised image to highlight that she feels comfortable dressing this way not because of a male spectator/perspective. We also wanted to keep the artists look consistent therefore she always had the same hairstyle and reasonably similar makeup, which would also suggest to our audience how she is too insecure to be seen without it. This would particularly challenge the common conventions of a music video because any other female artist who shares the same concept theme would have a variety of around 4 or 5 outfits that all have different colour schemes hair and makeup styles. In addition, the majority of female artists have makeup on therefore fulfilling audience expectations as females are usually presented as glamorous. This may be because big name stars have a very large budget where they are not limited to one style of costume, I believe we were successful in creating an expected image of the artist fulfilling codes and conventions.

We have challenged codes and conventions due to our lack of props in the video, many artists include dramatic props due to their budget however, I believe we were successful in highlighting semiotics and symbolic codes through M-E-S, editing and characterization.
From our research we discovered that other real media products such as Mi-Gente by J Balvin and Willy William that the use of colour can attract an audience and make the video more appealing even if the visuals don't have much to do with the lyrics. Vibrant locations are a common convention used in pop music videos, our choice to film in Camden has helped us to fulfill this convention. I believe our choice of location can link to Stuart Hall’s Reception theory (encoding-decoding) as the lyrics portray depression, misery and weakness. However, the locations contrast hugely meaning our intention was to help the audience decode the message that the young female feels as if society is moving on without her as she ‘cant deal with these pressures’.

As well as our music video we created a CD digipack to promote our brand image and video. I designed the inside of the CD, on the left is an image of a photo of a display of Polaroid pictures which I believe would be eye catching to our target audience due to the female nature of the image. We added text including previous work that the artist had achieved ‘I hate you I love you’ and the purpose of her song ‘Empty’ to create an artist, audience connection. The front cover of our CD was designed by Ellie, an image from our photo-shoot was used as we believe its simple yet effective as the dull tones would be recognizable and provide a strong message in relation to the song. The VHS tape concealing the artists identity is a juxtaposition to the sexualised images that audiences are used to seeing of female artists in order to promote a specific image.
As a final product we had to create a magazine advert that would be easily recognizable by our target audience and promote the previous products. We used the same image for our magazine advert however, experimented with the colour tones in order to not have an exact match in products. Unlike similar products we avoided including much text onto our magazine in order to highlight the emptiness surrounding the artist.

Evaluation Question 1- In What Way Does Your Media Product Use, Develop Or Challenge Forms And Conventions Of Real Media Products?

iin this directors cut I will be discussing how our music video and media products develop and challenge the forms and conventions of real media and will highlight what ideas and theories I used and how they were relevant . We have chosen the song ‘Empty’ by an unsigned artist called Olivia O'Brien.

Our music video shows a very strong theme of emotion and identity and how society shapes us and our image. This is portrayed through the lyrics too as it links to how the singer is feeling the pressures of society and its stressing her out. "I can't handle these pressures; all I can say is this stress hurts" this follows Levi Strauss' binary opposite theory  as we place the artist in the busy streets of London however focusing on the fact that even though the streets are full of people she still feels isolated and invisible.
This line from the song suggests that she is in pain and hurting by the fact she can't cope with the needs of society today. we used Codes such as alcohol bottles and cigarettes so that the audience could decode the fact she's finding different ways to cope with the pain and therefore they can relate. "But maybe I've just had too much to drink, to smoke, to swallow" here she is showing how she, and other teenagers are trying to cope with the pressures by taking extreme measures by consuming drugs ad alcohol as a temporary fix. The linking of visuals and lyrics means that we can link to the use of Goodwin’s rules to make the music video more successful to our audience so that they can understand and relate to the video and song.
We decided to choose this song as it was quite unusual as it is an upbeat song however is the complete opposite to the lyrics.

one editing technique that is often a common convention of the pop genre is cutting to the beat.  we successfully showed this is 0.25 - 0.27 and 2.18 where we show the artist in sync with the significant beats in the song.  We also decided to use passing cars as we've discovered from our research that it is a popular choice, to make it more creative we used shallow focus and speed variation to suit the tempo of the music. We linked this to Goodwin’s rules to cut to the beat therefore it is used in many big star artists music videos, which influenced our choice in order to have a more professional looking music video. We used parallel editing for the different locations in order to create a juxtaposition between the fact that even though she is in a crowd in the busy streets of London she still feels alone. After watching "just give me a reason" music video by pink I wanted to create the same feeling of abandonment by the use of negative space and chiaroscuro lighting.

We challenged the fact that the audience would expect bright vibrant colours and a more sexualised image of the artist as we juxtaposed both of these aspects by contrasting them against each other. For example the vibrant colours to dull and revealing outfits to covered up and vice versa.
One theory that we didn't use was the Hypodermic needle as we wanted an active audience.
However we used blumler and katz - uses and gratifications as the audience is active and individuals choose texts for specific reasons, it presents the use of media texts in terms of the gratification of social or psychological needs.

We did some research on a variety of pop genre music videos to see how females we presented. we wanted our artist to look dressed up so that immediate attention was drawn to her,The outfits consisted of extreme ripped jeans showing a lot of flesh with a revealing top. However we didn't always present her as sexualised as in some of the music video we went against audience expectations as we dressed her in a non revealing black top with a sleeveless, fluffy black jacket in order to highlight the juxtaposition between the rebellious and timid characteristics of the artist. Our audience members may link this concept to Laura Mulvey's 'The Male Gaze' theory where in this case men are active and women are passive, men do the looking; women are there to be looked at. This is due to the revealing clothing creating a sexualised image of the artist which wasn't our aim to perceive her like that. We can also link this to Gauntlett and femininity as he talks about the concept of being a strong independent women but still having the idea that women can be tough and independent but still maintaining that 'perfect' image. One example of real media text that we can relate this to is 'Beyonce' as she is a prime example. she is a strong, independent, successful women however decides to present herself as sexualised.

We challenged Berger's 'Ways of seeing' theory as our artist is presented in this sexualised image however we highlighted the fact that she is still concentrating on herself and ignoring the fact that she is getting male attention as it isn't her main worry. We decided that due to our genre it was prominent that she had a full face of makeup and modern fashion sense so that our female audience can relate and decode the fact that she might wear makeup to hide/conceal her flaws and dress up in a sexualised manner in order to impress. This challenges the common conventions of a music video as other female artists would dress like this in order to gain the attention of a male.
the fact the artist has makeup on therefore fulfilsaudience expectations as females are usually presented as glamorous and not taking drugs or consuming alcohol as it is seen as more of a male leisure activity.  we were successful in creating an expected image of the artist fulfilling codes and conventions.
We have challenged codes and conventions due to the lack of props we have used in the video many artists include dramatic props due to their budget such as real media products like Lady Gaga, however we were successful in highlighting semiotics and symbolic codes through M-E-S, editing and characterisation.
From our research we discovered that other real media products such as Shakira waka waka that the use of colour can attract an audience and make the video more appealing. Vibrant locations are a also a common convention used in pop music videos, our choice to film in Camden up against the vibrant graffiti walls has helped us to fulfill this convention. Our choice of location can link to Stuart Hall’s Reception theory (encoding-decoding) as the lyrics portray depression and weakness. However, the locations contrast greatly which means that our intention was to help the audience decode the message that the young female feels as if society leaving her behind as she ‘cant deal with these pressures’.

As well as our music video we created a CD digipack to promote our brand image and video. For this I designed the front, back and inside left of the digipack. For this I did a photoshoot of Cherry. For the front cover I decided to situate Cherry in the middle with a VHS tape over her face in order to conceal her identity. I decided to use this as a juxtaposition to the sexualised images that audiences are used to seeing of female artists in order to promote a specific image and make ours unique.I decided to photograph her against a plain white wall in a studio so that the negative space would engulf her, linking to the title of our song, 'Empty'. For the back cover I decided to get up close and personal by taking a close up which focused on her eyes. We also added featured tracks on the back. Cherry created the inside right of the digipack which consisted of a bright pink wall with polaroids on (which photographed by myself) I edited it and added the circles where the CD would sit

For our magazine front cover I decided to stick with the same photograph that we used for our CD cover however I edited the photo of her on photoshop, I edited the image so that it was black and white and then inverted the colours the created a ghostly vibe so it was concise with the rest of the album. I added some text to create the name of the artist and the title for the album. For the front cover I followed the codes and conventions of a CD cover by having a picture of the artist, the title of the album and the name of the artist. I used the same image of her concealing herself with a VHS tape as it provides the compelling visual juxtaposition between everyday humans and the images seen in advertisements, taking a hard look at our identity, as it de-faces and destroys her own image. The fragility of her identity becomes visible, almost tangible. The laws of appearance drive us, in fact, to shape our own image to the point of transformation. Beauty is no longer natural, but rather socially conditioned.

Evaluation Question 2

Evaluation Question 2 : How Effective is the Combination of Your Main Ancillary Texts

Evaluation Question 2: How Effective is the Combination of Your Main Ancillary Texts by Mediagerc Productions

Evaluation Question 3

Question: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The initial target audience for our music video and ancillary products was teenage girls ranging from the ages of 15 to early twenties, as young girls are becoming young adults meaning they are experiencing difficult challenges in their life therefore suggesting they can relate to this song. We created the image of our artist to appeal more to women than men, this was done through her appearance (binary opposites of revealing and covering costume) and positioning with props or camera in locations to indicate a message that women would easily recognise e.g. the VHS tape covering the artists eyes to conceal her identity and the people walking past the young girl in the tube station as if her . Furthermore, although the age gap of the target audience is wide, we were mostly focusing on attracting mid-teens. This is because the message we wanted to portray to them is more relevant to mid-teens than any other age; that everyone is free to be who they want to be. However, I believe that our music video is accessible to most age ranges due to it being a pop music genre as it is extremely popular genre.

Research

  • Strong messaged was conveyed throughout not only through the lyrics but the expression of the artist and editing techniques used
  • Vibrant location choices were one of the main element that stood out for people
  • All media products linked well with each other
  • Professionally edited (transitions, overlays, effects)
We wanted to research more about current audience activities in the general public, a popular way of interacting with wide audience is through vlogs where anyone can post any opinion about music videos or other categories. Vlogs are used by the audience to promote certain music videos such as reaction videos, and I see that media industries have used this as a way of publicizing their media products in order to reach a wide audience fast and gain helpful feedback. From researching vlogs i have learnt how audiences find ways to connect with the artist, find inspiration within their songs and influence artists to create more music as fans approval is what inspires artists talent therefore leading to further promotion of the artist and their talent.
Reaction videos are a great way of publishing a music video. They are viral, meaning that they reach audiences in a global scale, as well as promote an artists image and previous music they have done.
We also researched a lot of other promotion techniques, such as behind the scenes footage, mini documentaries, influencing audiences to create covers etc. A personal favourite of mine is behind the scenes footage as I think they help let the audience get a personal glimpse of the artist's personality and not just the image that we've created to promote the music video. We have uploaded images onto our blog throughout the process of creating our music video, although they are implanted within the music video to create the image of the artists. We wanted to upload stills of our locations or working to show what footage we thought would be successful or not and give our teachers and peers a further insight to what we were doing for inspiration. When experimenting with a range of theories and genre types we created short clips e.g. Todorov's theory to show our understanding, I believe this counts as behind the scenes footage as it gives our audience an insight to our additional research.

Another thing we have researched are charts as we wanted to see what types of music genres are currently popular within society. Unsuprisingly, pop was the most popular genre, this is an advantage for us as our song choice would be liked by the majority of society. This helped us get an idea of what the audience were expected from an image/spectacle type music video.

Planning

Class Designs

These are the ideas that we came up with individually for a CD cover which best represented our genre and artist. We experimented with vibrant and dull coloured images as well as font types to see what would fulfil the codes and conventions best. our target audience felt that one of the ideas was too bright suggesting a joyful atmosphere which does not support our song choice, however they felt that it was a good idea to have an image of the artist on the cover. This feedback influenced us to use Stuart Hall's Reception theory so we could help our audience understand the concept of our final design.

This is this part of our class designs for our digipack. We did an idea each, then combined the ideas to create our final digipack. This way we could generate more than one idea, and combine what we liked from each other. We also had peer evaluation where we showed our individual design to our peers, and they give us an evaluation of what works and what doesn't for our genre. The VHS tape used we felt related to our song choice and even though it has no appearance in our music video would stand out on our ancillary products as our audience would feel intrigued due to the identity of the artist being concealed. We chose to do this as we have learnt from our research how visual elements can draw audience members in and also give the a further insight to the connotations of the VHS tape as the lyrics explain the feeling of having no identity or place in society.
This is the original design of our magazine cover which we had created using elements from a photoshoot we carried out to show representations of our artist. This was a quick task we did in order to decide what we thought was essential to go onto the cover along with the information that may appeal to audiences as well as the image presented. We received feedback that suggested our design was appropriate due to the link between this cover and our cd cover but we needed to make it look professional and appealing to our target audience as well as referencing the lyrics.

This is now our final our magazine advert, which is similar to our digipack as we feel it will be recognisable by our audience (as we used our target audience feedback to improve), however, the styles differ to avoid repetition. This was so that we can be consistent, and start to create our brand image.
From doing these designs i have learnt that every technique used or prop or costume has an affect on the way the audience view the artist as an individual which can then influence an opinion on their music. The image shown to the audience through the ancillary products is how they connect to the artist before the music is heard as a message is being sent out therefore meaning each component is equally important to the design.

Wordle

We used Wordle to see which lyrics stood out the most within our song, to enable us to come up with a theme and how to use theories such as Stuart Hall's reception theory (Encoding-Decoding) to fulfil audience expectations, codes and conventions. Our wordle refers to Hall's theories as well as Semiotics as symbolic codes are used such as our wordle shape (cocktail glass) encoding the stereotype that all teens result to alcohol but the audience decode a deeper message about a teen struggling with life alone which leads to a dark path including the wrong choice 'maybe I've had too much to drink, to smoke, to swallow'.

Audience Interviews and Pitch Feedback
We showed our target audience our initial song choice and asked a few questions afterwards about their expectations: Locations, Mise-en-scene (clothing, props...), and genre. From this we concluded that the audience was expecting more of an image based genre (due to the artist being a female, which is a common response)which focused on the artist. One audience mentioned challenging the stigma of the video looking all miserable and depressing due to the lyrics and making the issue more subtle by placing the artist out in the open. They also linked the idea of spectacle as that is a common genre that intrigues audiences. In terms or mise-en-scene the audience wanted to see glamorous clothing, with exaggerated makeup. We used these ideas in our final music video, creating an image and spectacle based video while also building the artist's image with her costume.

Survey Monkey Results

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/63HZ52Y
This is part of our results from our Survey Monkey Interview, where we asked the general internet audience what they would expect from a pop genre music video. This shows what they expect from pop genre music video, this was helpful in generating ideas for our music video. For example for editing and M-E-S we were able to show binary opposites as well as fulfil audience expectations.

Interim Evaluations

Facebook

On Facebook we have uploaded updates of our Final Design pieces, like our digipack. Using social media is helpful for connecting with the target audience as well as our peers about what is successful or not. Comments were sent via facebook messenger which were positive explaining how they enjoyed our music video and what components stood out to them the most. This comment is from our first rough cut video. We used this feedback as a way to progress forward with our filming and editing ensuring our audiences would be satisfied with the next draft.

Peer Evaluations

These are peer evaluations from our 1st draft of our final music video. They evaluated how much our music video supported the mark scheme and their opinion on how we could improve the video or leave questions about what they were unsure about. We thoroughly looked through all the feedback in order to decide on what we believed was the most important detail that needed to be fixed first and went on from their, so that we could fulfil all audience expectations, codes and conventions. I think this has helped improve our work significantly to enable us to receive the highest grade possible for the standard of work completed.

This is peer evaluations from our final digipack, as the feedback we got previously from our digipack draft was minimum e.g. add the record label on the front cover. We are satisfied with the positive feedback we have received about our ancillary product and hope the audience are satisfied overall.

Final Feedback

We got positive comments when asking our audience about our final music video and ancillary products including:

  • A strong message is conveyed throughout
  • The editing techniques used help represent the genre more clearly
  • The audience can easily understand how the artist is feeling due to the cinematography, lyrics and acting.
Summary
Ultimately, our audience feedback helped us to refine all our media products. Especially from our initial design to our final design, which can be seen from our digipack and magazine advert along with our working progress pages throughout the design process. I believe that the audience's comments are important as it's their expectations we are meeting as well as ensuring we fulfil codes and conventions. I believe we were successful in creating 3 products that portray our creativity and skills along with satisfying our audience and peers.
